As many of you know by now, our home was burglarized Sunday evening while we slept. I'm slightly annoyed by the whole sitch.
1. Partially our own fault. While I didn't dare some pot-head to sneak in after midnight and see what he could find, I also neglected to ensure my garage door was closed. So essentially, I layed out the welcome mat.
2. I'm not the only idiot in town, as three other houses were also robbed the same evening. All with doors unlocked. Luckily, the punks were novices, and made off with only a few items. The worst was someone's car, which was only used for joyriding before police recovered it. We lost an ipod, a blackberry, an archaic cellphone which I planned on taking to the grave with me, my purse, and Skip's bike.
3. The downside of all that is that my purse had my keys in it. So we had to rekey the entire house AND both vehicles. I'm pretty sure no one would come back for the minivan, but Skip's Jeep is SERIOUSLY awesome. And very recognizeable. Also, I had to cancel all my bank cards and other pertinent items. I wasted hours on the phone doing so. I frown on wasting time.
4. SOMEONE WAS IN MY HOUSE. I'm betting they didn't first remove their shoes, as I like people to do. I'm also betting they broke our sobriety policy. I'm also kind of annoyed because *EDITED BY PARENTAL CONTROLS*, and what if they were hanging around listening? Seriously, how rude is that.
5. Lots of people have asked me if Skip kicked their asses. (What. People have asked me that. I'm only quoting what people have asked.) We were probably asleep when they came in. So we didn't even hear them. But I will say this. Had they been caught, they would be lucky to be upwardly mobile. Skip has impeccable self-control, along with the ability to seriously maim. Combine the two, and I'm almost a teense disappointed we slept through it all.
6. Skip and I are like Nancy Drew and One Of The Hardy Boys. We make a great team. Neither one of us freaked out when we discovered what had happened. We immediately began taking care of everything. It was kind of cool to work in tandem with him like that. Between the two of us, I think we thought of everything that needed to be done, and we rolled right through our day handling it.
7. I think the kids did fine. No one seemed scared, and we were able to laugh about a lot of it. We discussed some changes we would need to make, reassured them, and hopefully educated them a bit in the process. No one freaked out at bedtime last night, which frankly I was expecting.
8. As weird as this sounds, I think God prepped us for this.
a) As I've mentioned in the past, when Skip is out of town I like to send him HAPPY SMILING pictures of myself. I recently learned he stores said pictures on his phone. A few days before this incident, he decided he should just go ahead and delete them for saftey's sake. So I'm relieved to know that if you google "HAPPY SMILING" you will NOT find my picture, uploaded by a teenage pothead.
b) Earlier last week I decided I did not want to carry around the key to the school I work at in my purse for the summer. I did not want to be responsible should something happen to it, and I wouldn't be needing it. So I brought it back to the school.
c) Last week I had the idea to transfer all my numbers from my cellphone into a backup location. I told Skip I should do that. Then, of course, I didn't. I should've listened.
So it could've been a lot worse in a lot of superficial AND serious ways. We are thankful we were protected, and we were able to learn some lessons in the process. But if you happen to see a twitchy meth junkie riding a $700 Gary Fisher bike around town, with a black leather Tommy Hilfigger bag slung over his shoulder, talking on a Blackberry and shuffling through the playlists on an ipod... please be sure to let Skip know. An ass or two could still be kicked.

"I'm also kind of annoyed because Skip and I had some late night activities"
Up playing Trivial Pursuit again? Or dominoes, per chance?
Sorry.
I'll bring back the ipod, the song list sucks anyway. Your cell phone sucks too. Skip forgot a couple of pictures- look for them on posters in the Czech Republic, a la' "European Vacation."
I'm keeping the bike.
And this is a now a Tommy Hilfiger SATCHEL, not a PURSE.
What a bummer! My girlfriend's house got broken into a couple of weeks ago . . . DURING THE DAY. It was a friendly reminder for me to go through the whole safety thing with the kids and to remind them that yes, even if we are home the doors need to be locked.
Ooooh. I would feel very, violated. You're handling it beautifully. And by the way.. it sounds like you guys have some kinda cool stuff. Bet the purse was cute.. darn-it.
Glad you guys are safe.. (AND sexually active! Props!)
I so hope Skip finds them.
Just to hurt them a *little*.
Robbers suck.
So glad that all is well. That story could have had a much worse ending! I felt violated when we had a mouse in our house--I'm pretty sure I would freak out if an actual un-invited person were in my house! And had all the crap I accumulate in my purse (never money--but all the pictures, coupons, free punch cards, etc).
I'll be on the lookout for your meth addict.
When we lived in SLC, someone broke into our place and took very little, they did however steal the quad I bought Brad when he turned 30. So if you run into a junkie using scriptures inscribed with the name J. Bradley, will you nab him/her for me?
Glad everything is ok. We had our car and a bunch of stuff stolen out of our garage a couple of years ago, and I felt so violated. That sucks (even while you are thankful it wasn't worse).
I can't believe how well you are handling this...you're amazing!
Someone stole my daughter's bike out of our backyard the other day and I was upset about that, let alone someone coming into our house.
I did have my purse stolen out of my car about a year ago and that was so much worse, I felt totally violated. They had my wallet, my keys, my cell phone...you don't realize how much of your "life" is in your purse until someone steals it…and the "clean-up" is a nightmare trying to remember all the different places you need to call to report it as stolen and whatnot.
I'm so glad that it was all just stuff and your family is ok!
We have had the police leave notes on our garage door because we've left it open before. I am totally making sure it's shut tight now.
Oh, and, sending your husband naughty pictures on his phone? Why didn't I think of that? My husband is gone ALL THE TIME and could use a little long-distance love.
In your next venture, write a book about spicing up a marriage. You could title it, "How to have a happy marriage: Have lots of late night activities and send pictures to his phone." You'll make billions and you can give me a shout out in the acknowlegement page.
Or 20 percent of profits would be nice.
DANG! That stinks. You are handling it VERY well. Glad everyone is fine. I think I'll double check that garage door right now. Goodnight.
Wow. You are so calm, cool and collected about it. I can see how you and Skip would make a good team that way. I can imagine you guys starring in a prime time TV drama. With a higher rating because you know, there would be lots of "late night relations" too.
And by the way, I'm really thankful that you and your family are all okay.
I would freak out! Are you surprised?!?!?!
You are handling this so well. And it is reflective in your kids' behavior. Good for you and Skip.
I think you should do a post on how you keep track of all your important info so that when something like this does happen taking care of it all is a breeze. It would be like an online preparedness Enrichment night!
You have a great man. The ability to, "seriously maim" as well as have, "impeccable self control" are great attributes. You are amazing, yourself, my dear.
I am glad you kept a cool head and didn't freak out. I probably would have freaked out a bit...and by, "a bit" I mean a WHOLE LOT. Sorry for all of the wasted time, though...that is so lousy.
Glad he deleted the pictures. That would be the worst if those pot heads got a hold of them.
You're so collected about this whole thing. I think I would be a wreck. One time my P.O.S. car got broken into and I bawled for two days and all they stole from it was the battery. I was 19 at the time, but still... Breaking and entering makes you feel SO violated.
Glad you're okay.
I'm off to kick my kid's butt for leaving the garage door open... AGAIN!
I would be freaking out! I would feel so violated! Although I am the lightest sleeper ever so I am pretty sure I would hear if anyone did break in.
I think the comment about "late night activities" is awesome!! ;)
Horrified!
I have a feeling you would have "kicked their asses" too...at least verbally!
Okay. That sucks!
We had our car broken into a few years ago. They stole a checkbook that belonged to Aric's business account. It was very unnerving, a month after the fact we got the checks back with the crooks handwriting on them...it made me mad all over again.
I hate bad guys!
Too bad Carson is not selling secutiry systems this summer. I would send him right over!
Glad everyone is safe.
