Tooth Lost

My angel child lost her first tooth at school this week. She is beyond elated, as most children her age have already lost at least one. She was feeling left out.

She brought the tooth home in a plastic sandwich baggie and after spending hours examining it, replaced it in the baggie and left it on the counter. In my attempts to maintain order and cleanliness in my home, I inadvertently threw it away whilst tidying up. As any good mom would, I sort of leaned over the garbage can to see if it could be retrieved. The baggie was there, but upside down. Applying your powers of deductive reasoning, you will quickly discover that the tooth itself was in the trash, alone, tiny, and lost forever.

Noe left a note for the tooth fairy that said, "Sorry about my tooth. It's in the trash." and tucked it under her pillow that evening. She then told me, "If you see the tooth fairy, can you tell her to look for my tooth? It's small and white, and there's a little blood on the bottom." Because our tooth fairy is often delinquent and therefore driven by guilt to perform, a very special note appeared under Noe's pillow that night. Written in delicate lilac ink on soft pink paper, embossed with X's and O's, it read, "My dearest Noe. I am sorry to hear about your tooth! I looked through the trash and I found it! Here is a dollar for you. With love, The Tooth Fairy."

Noe came out of her room crying that morning, holding the lovely pink note and accompanying dollar. Confused, I asked her what was wrong. In her best Eloise voice she replied, "I'd RAWTHER like to have my tooth back! The tooth fairy is a STEALER!"
And then this note under her pillow last night:
We explained to her that the tooth fairy uses the teeth to build her castle. Funny thing, the tooth fairy left another note last night that said, "My dearest Noe. I'm sorry to tell you that I have already glued your tooth to my castle wall. It was very shiny and had no cavities, so it's on my special wall. Next time, I will leave your tooth under your pillow. Love, T.F." This note was not written on special paper, and was more hastily scrawled with a pencil. We'll see what this morning's reaction is.

What a cute story! I love the idea of the tooth fairy castle out of teeth, I may have to adopt that idea. My kids have learned that the tooth fairy is very busy and that sometimes she doesn't always make it the first night their tooth is under their pillow :) (I can be such a slacker mom sometimes!)

Oh, poor Noe. I would want my tooth back as well.

A similar thing happened to Norah's first lost tooth. She was down in the basement playing when all of a sudden I heard her screaming. She came running up the stairs with tears streaming down her face and her mouth open and blood running out-it was like a scene from Carrie. Norah is just a little over anxious and apparently loosing the tooth and seeing the blood was too much. When I asked her where the tooth was, she said she lost in down the drain because she tried to rinse away all that blood (see, Carrie). The tooth fairy took apart the basement bathroom drain that night, but no tooth. Poor Norah.

Oh, my gracious...this story just kept getting better and better. I am loving how she said, "RAWTHER".

I love your writing. I know I always say things like that but it's just when you say things like "Applying your powers of deductive reasoning" or how the tooth fairy is "driven by guilt to perform" I want to go back and read every post you have ever written.

I seriously hate the tooth fairy. I have never understood why we parents keep this myth alive.

Give me Santa any day.

But the tooth fairy is a lot of work. I'd rather just hand my kids a dollar.

That's some good stuff right there. I can already hear the "well, unglue it" coming.

Dear Noe,

Your tooth is at the dump. I have bowling tonight, so I'm not looking for it. Blame your Mom. You can probably get ice cream out of this.

Love,

Tooth Fairy.

That is completely hilarious. How about this? You send me her dollar (the budget's tight this year at the Romney house) and I will send her the next tooth Jane loses, kay?

Oh, that is too funny. "Building a castle..." huh? That's a good one!

That is so cute! She is so you! Maddie has had a loose tooth for a while now. I don't remember how long it takes them to fall out? But I wonder if Maddie will react the same way.

At least Noe's tooth fairy is quite clever! ;)

I love any girl that quotes "Eloise." So cute. What will she do with all those little teeth? A bloody little relic of her early years - yummy.

She can keep her teeth and send them to my dad--he is making my mom a necklace with all our babyteeth and I'm sure he'll make Noe one of her own!

So funny! You are a good mom/tooth fairy. I think it is so funny that she wants it back!

THat is a good story. She'll love it someday. And poor you having to deal with that drama! You did a great job covering for yourself. I'm going to have to use the castle story- we've lost teeth around here too.
