This week's tune is Closer by Goapele. She has only been on the music scene since the start of the new millenium, and has released three albums. Her voice reminds me a little of the smooth, rich vocals of Sade. Here's a little write-up I found on her:
"Goapele (born Goapele Mohlabane on 11th July 1977 in Oakland, California) is a U.S. soul and R&B singer-songwriter. Her name means “to go forward” in the South African language Sesotho. She was born to a Jewish mother, Noa, and an African father, Douglas Mohlabane, who was a South African political exile. They married in Nairobi, Kenya." (www.last.fm/music/Goapele) (note my keen ability to reference copyrighted material.)
This isn't really a love song; it's more like a song about moving on. I don't really know why she wrote it, or what she was writing about. But when I listen to it, the melody is almost hypnotic, and her vocals are so soothing, that it makes me feel like she's coming out of something ugly and finding her way towards something better. I think everyone can relate to that. Check her out, she has lots of other great songs.

You stumped me this week...I haven't heard of her before...but this was beautiful and very relaxing. I will definitely be looking her up!
I have never heard of her before either, but I liked this song. I may have to check out some more of her stuff.
I like her name. I'm glad to know that she got out of Oakland though, seriously hate Oakland. It is the most ghetto city ever.
I don't know how I have missed her but thanks for the introduction. This is exactly the kind of stuff I love.
You stumped me too. But now I am totally fascinated by her.
This one is new to me...how do you pronounce her name? I'm sure I'm butchering it...
Thanks for the introduction.
i don't know how to pronounce it. i say go-uh-PEL-ay but i read online that it's gwah-puh-LAY.
i've called her go-uh-PEL-ay for so long, i probably won't be able to change my ways. hopefully she won't be offended. i mean jeeze, i just gave her a killer shout out here, and boosted her fan-base by at least 4.
I'm naming my next kid Goapele. And then the next Stoporange.
I had never heard of her either. She has a beautiful voice...and she is VERY beautiful, too.
I had forgotten all about Sade...In high school we would sing that, "Sweetest Taboo" (sp?)song...
